New York Yankees: Are Seattle Mariners GM’s Feelings Phony?

Just when you thought that nobody in Major League Baseball would ever feel bad for the New York Yankees, especially their injuries, Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik broke the mold.
Zduriencik’s feelings were in regards to Michael Pineda’s injury, according to Mike Mazzeo of ESPN.com:
“I feel bad for Brian, and I feel very bad for the Yankees,” Zduriencik said prior to Friday night’s Yankees-Mariners series opener at Yankee Stadium. “I wish this thing would’ve been a little different. But again, the fact that (Pineda)’s so young and he’s strong, he should bounce back from this.”
While I admire his optimism for the future of Pineda and his recovery, Zduriencik impresses me even more with his sympathy for “The Evil Empire.”
It’s extremely rare to find anyone with a nice thing to say about the Bombers, even though I think the Mariners’ GM feels worse for his fellow GM Brian Cashman and less for the organization as a whole.
Cashman appears, at least at this point, to have been burned by the trade, as both Pineda and Jose Campos are on the DL with Pineda’s injury being season-ending. Meanwhile, the two pieces the Yanks sent over, Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi, are both contributing this year for the big-league club.
And in regards to the conspiracy theory that the Mariners’ GM knew about Pineda’s potential arm problems, once again, it was shot down.
In the same article, Mazzeo states that Seattle’s GM has been steadfast in denying any such conspiracy.
Zduriencik has maintained he never knew Pineda was damaged goods when he traded the 23-year-old to the Yankees in January’s blockbuster deal in exchange for DH/catcher Jesus Montero.
Enjoy the sympathy, Yankee fans! It doesn’t come around very often.
But I will say, if there is a team that doesn’t need anyone’s sympathy, it’s the Bronx Bombers.
