Only 1 More Start Necessary Before Andy Pettitte Can Return to New York Yankees

Andy Pettitte had his longest start in his comeback attempt on Monday, tossing 96 pitches over 5.2 innings with Double-A Trenton.

He didn’t see many positive results, though, as he allowed six runs on 10 hits. He did strike out eight in the contest.

This is not the first bad outing for Pettitte in his comeback attempt, which isn’t necessarily a good sign for the New York Yankees. Minor-league results probably shouldn’t be too big of a concern for the team at this point in his comeback, as he’s still working his way back into playing shape.

The team’s plan is to give Pettitte just one more start before he is ready to return on either May 10 or 11. He’ll likely toss around the same number of pitches in that start as he did today.

In an interview with MLB.com, Pettitte said he is “ready to help the team.”

His return couldn’t come at a better time for the Yankees.

Freddy Garcia has already been bumped from the rotation in favor of rookie David Phelps, and Phil Hughes has been almost has inconsistent as Garcia. Hughes will likely have two more starts before Pettitte is ready to return, so he may not actually be bumped from the rotation. Should he pitch well, Phelps will probably be the odd man out.

There’s no guarantee Pettitte will perform at the level we are all expecting, but it’ll be pretty difficult for him to be worse than the likes of Garcia and Hughes.
