Last week we noticed that Hideki Matsui’s knees have been bothering him and they’ve already forced him to miss baseball games. This week we found out why.

hideki-matsui1According to George King of the NY Post, Matsui had to have fluid drained from his left knee and missed games because of that.

Two weeks into the season, Hideki Matsui’s surgically repaired left knee already has needed to be drained.

According to GM Brian Cashman, Matsui had fluid taken out of the hinge last Thursday and there is a level of concern about the designated hitter.

“The bottom line is that he has had surgery on either knee the last two years and you see at times he has struggled,” Cashman said of Matsui, who is batting an anemic .194 (6-for-31) overall and .083 (1-for-12) with runners in scoring position. “It’s a concern. We will have to keep an eye on it, there is no doubt about that.”

Like I said last week, because of the injury to Xavier Nady this could be a big issue. The Yankees were counting on Matsui’s production, but they thought they would have Nick Swisher to plug into his spot should he fail.

Now they don’t have that luxury anymore and instead could make a trade if they decide not to call up Juan Miranda or Shelley Duncan which is a less likely possibility.
