The New York Yankees were able to stop the bleeding after going 0-3 by beating the Baltimore Orioles Monday night, 6-2.

Derek Jeter led the Yankees to their first win of the 2012 season by going 4-for-4 with four hits.

Starting pitcher Ivan Nova had a solid outing in his first start of the season, striking out seven with no walks and giving up a home run in the second inning to Matt Wieters.

Jeter stepped up to the plate leading off in the first inning hitting a single and scored on an RBI single by Mark Teixeira.

Russell Martin contributed with an RBI single in the fourth inning, adding to Jeter’s third hit of the night, a double that scored another run.

Andruw Jones hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning, giving the Yankees a four-run lead.

In the seventh inning, Brett Gardner hit an RBI single to give the Yankees a comfortable lead.

The Yankees left Tampa on Sunday after a tough three-game loss, being swept in that series. If they had been feeling down, they didn’t allow it to show in their performance against Baltimore. New York began to pound away from the beginning of the game and didn’t let up.

Yes, it’s true that it is too early in the season to be concerned about going 0-3 against Tampa. One win against the Orioles may not seem like much, but it is an important win. This was a confidence-building win.

As we saw last season on the last day of regular play, every game counts. The final game of the season last year made or broke the postseason for a number of teams.

Every game counts.  Every game matters.
