In the first game of a three-game set at Camden Yards, the Yankees took home the win on Monday, 6-2. The game featured a pleasant performance from Ivan Nova en route to the Yankees’ first win of the young season.
The most interesting part of the game may have happened after the final pitch was thrown, though.
Russell Martin exchanged heated words with Robert Andino after the final pitch, believing that the Orioles‘ second baseman was relaying pitch locations in the bottom of the ninth inning after he laced a one-out double.
While Martin avoided the details of the argument and Joe Girardi described the event (via yankees.com) as “boys were being boys,” one other Yankee—who remains unknown—claimed that Andino was tipping pitches while Mariano Rivera was on the mound.
Martin was very vague when recalling the event, saying: “I don’t remember what happened at the end there. A little yapping session towards the end. Nothing crazy.”
Andino was unavailable for comment after the game.
Although Martin admitted that he had never had issues with Andino in the past, he did not deny the fact that the emotions may carry over into Tuesday’s game.
“Maybe it’ll be more exciting, I don’t know,” he said. “I can’t predict the future. It’s fun. It’s baseball—there’s emotions flying and stuff. What else can I say?”
This isn’t the first time since joining the Yankees that Martin has had an issue with an opponent stealing signs. On July 14th of last season in Toronto, Martin was upset that the Blue Jays were stealing signs and tipping pitches during an eight-run first inning.
Be on the lookout for fireworks during the game on Tuesday, as there’s no indication that the problem has subsided.
If the starting pitchers—Freddy Garcia and Wei-Yin Chen—are throwing inside to batters early in the contest, don’t be surprised if another altercation occurs at some point in the action.
