MLB Free Agency: Gerardo Concepcion Declared a Free Agent

Gerardo Concepcion is no stranger to baseball. He was awarded Rookie of the Year for the 2010-11 season within the Cuban Serie Nacional, which is Cuba’s main amateur league.
The 18-year-old’s stats are impressive, accordingly, with a 3.36 ERA in 21 games, with a record of 10-3. He’s started 16 times with Industriales de la Habana.
According to Concepcion’s agent, Jaime Torres, the young and talented player is now considered a free agent and able to talk to any major league team he wishes.
Not surprisingly, the team seemingly most interested in Concepcion? The New York Yankees.
Concepcion has officially declared his residency within Mexico as of Tuesday, after defecting from Cuba last summer during a tournament. He is currently training in the Dominican Republic, and is scheduled to train at the Yankees’ camp in the same area on Thursday.
Other teams reportedly on the radar to incorporate Concepcion into their roster include the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox, according to Torres.
It is unclear where Concepcion may land at this point, but considering the player’s impressive stats and young age, it is not surprising that teams are trying to bring him in.
