This past Saturday, the New York Yankees signed the recently released Scott Proctor to a minor league contract with an assignment to their Triple-A affiliate.

Proctor, who was released by the Braves on August 10th, was one of Joe Torre‘s favorite bullpen arms from 2004-2007.

In 2006, his best season to date, Proctor pitched in a league-leading 83 games, totaling 102.1 innings pitched. He racked up 89 strikeouts and posted a 3.52 ERA.

In 31 games this season for the Braves, Proctor has struggled. He has recorded more walks (19) than strikeouts (18) in 29.1 innings with a 6.44 ERA.

Proctor may not prove to be an impact pitcher for the Yankees down the stretch, but he could become a valuable arm. Rafael Soriano and David Robertson have cemented themselves as the seventh- and eighth-inning guys, respectively, so Proctor may fit in nicely as the mop-up guy in the fifth or sixth inning.

If he’s not called up by September 1st, he will surely called up when the rosters expand. Other bullpen arms that will probably be called up include Steve Garrison, Lance Pendleton and Kevin Whelan.
