Derek Jeter has recalled himself from the MLB All-Star Game in order to rest the injury to his calf muscle.
”Unfortunately, I won’t be able to go,” Jeter told Fox Sports before Friday night’s game against Tampa Bay.
Jeter, who is a 12-time All-Star was elected by fans to start the shortstop position.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said it was Jeter’s decision not to attend the All-Star game. Jeter talked it over with Girardi, Brian Cashman and trainer Gene Monaghan.
”It’s probably best not to push it because it’s most important to be ready for the second half. That’s where my focus has to be,” Jeter said to Fox Sports. ”It’s unfortunate because you know how much I enjoy going to All-Star games.”
”I’m trying to be smart about it. I know I can be stubborn a lot of times with injuries,” he said.
Not long after Jeter took himself out of the MLB All-Star Game, Alex Rodriguez did so as well. The New York Yankees announced that because of his sore knee, Rodriguez would not participate either.
Rodriguez, a 14-time All-Star had been elected to start at third base.
Shortly before the announcement, Girardi said it was Alex’s decision to make, whether to play in the All-Star Game or not.
”Alex has to make that choice. Would the rest help him? Probably,” Girardi said to Fox Sports. ”He’s banged up, he’s played a lot.”
That brought the number up to three New York Yankees who are not going to play on June 12th, in Phoenix.
Surprisingly, closer Mariano Rivera will sit out this year’s summer classic too, to heal his triceps on his right arm.
With interleague play over, the Boston Red Sox have reclaimed the top spot in the American League east. The Yankees sit a half game back. It is no surprise that the Red Sox dominate the American League.
Are the decisions to not play in the MLB All-Star game legit, or are the New York Yankees afraid of falling even further behind in the standings if their “star” players are not there?
I think it’s the latter.
