New York Yankees Notes: Wood, Berkman, Lowell, and Laird

The Yankees got dominated by a red hot James Shields yesterday as the Rays shut them out 3-0 yesterday. CC Sabathia struggled, but still managed to hold the Rays to just three runs in 6.2 innings.

Here are some notes:

-Kerry Wood made his Yankee debut yesterday. He pitched one inning, struck out three, and walked two.

-Maybe it’s just the lack of a goatee, but Wood looks a lot different than he did back in 2003.

-Lance Berkman didn’t have a hot first weekend with the Yankees; he went 1-for-8.

-The Yankees are still one game ahead of the Rays in first place and the two teams don’t face each other for another six weeks.

-The Yankees were actually trying to work out a three-team-deal that involved the Red Sox and Mike Lowell before the deadline.

-Minor league third baseman Brandon Laird got called up to Triple-A Scranton.

I’m glad that Rays series is over. They are a very good team who match up against the Yankees very well. The entire weekend I kept thinking that they are going to be tough if the Yankees face them in the ALCS, certainly much tougher than the Angels were last season.

It was good seeing Robinson Cano hit a home run off of their closer though.
