CC Sabathia, Randy Winn Lead New York Yankees Past Baltimore Orioles

CC Sabathia was dominating over eight innings tonight against the O’s. He allowed just one run on six hits, walked two and struck out two on his way to his fourth win of the year. CC didn’t have his best stuff, but it was clearly good enough to handle the O’s lineup.

The big fella was a ground ball machine tonight, retired 16 batters via the groundout, including two double plays. The lone Oriole run came on a Matt Wieters solo homer in the second, after that CC cruised and only allowed one base runner to reach third, and none after the fourth. This was also his fourth start of the season where he lasted at least seven innings.

Jeremy Guthrie also pitched well for the O’s. He lasted seven innings and only really got hit hard in one, a four-run Yankees half of the fourth.

Alex Rodriguez started the inning with a single. Two batters later Jorge Posada moved A-Rod to second with a ground out, and then Nick Swisher drove him in with a long single off the right field wall.

Brett Gardner continued the rally with a single and then Randy Winn stepped up and launched a Guthrie fastball deep into the Yankees bullpen for a three-run homer to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead. It was his first homer and RBIs of the season, and his first long ball in 491 at-bats. If you’re wondering Sterling’s call went something like this: A three run homer for Randy! He helps the Yankees Winn!

Neither team would score again and Joba Chamberlain came on and threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season. Joba’s velocity was very good tonight. His fastball was averaging 94.73 MPH and topped out at 95.5. As the weather gets hotter, Joba’s fastball is getting faster, which is very good to see.

If you’re wondering where Mariano Rivera was tonight, he experiences some stiffness in his side. After the game he said he played catch today and felt good but didn’t want to push it yet. Tomorrow he will throw and see if he can go in game two. Mo didn’t seem worried and said if this was the postseason he would have been able to go.

In other injury news, Jorge Posada left tonight’s game after the fifth with tightness in his right calf. He went for an MRI tonight and we’ll learn more tomorrow.

The Yanks look to make it two in a row over the O’s tomorrow night with A.J. Burnett on the mound. He will be squaring off against O’s lefty Brain Matusz. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be on YES.
