An 0-162 record? As if. The Yankees rebounded quickly with a win in game No. 2 of the season, defeating the Red Sox 6-4.
After the Yanks went down quietly 1-2-3 in the top of the first, the Red Sox and Jacoby Ellsbury immediately jumped on AJ Burnett in his season debut. Ellsbury led off with a single, and proceeded to steal second, and a Jorge Posada throwing error (one of THREE Yankee errors on the night), allowed him to take third. Kevin Youkilis drove him in on a sac fly. The Bombers responded in the second with an RBI double from Nick Swisher into the corner in right. (Score after two: 1-1).
After another 1-2-3 Yankee inning, the Red Sox took the lead again with a two-run homer from Victor Martinez into the Yankee bullpen. After a scoreless fourth, the Yankees took the lead after a Mark Teixeira RBI fielders choice, followed by an Alex Rodriguez RBI double, and a Robinson Cano sac fly. Victor Martinez provided some more offense in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double. (Score after five: 4-4).
Alfredo Aceves worked a scoreless sixth and seventh. The Yanks couldn’t score the leadoff man those two innings, and the game remained even until the eighth. Posada led off the inning with a ground-rule double into right, and with two outs Brett Gardner (who replaced Marcus Thames earlier) singled to left. With runners at first and second and two outs, Derek Jeter hit an easy ground ball to new Nation member Marco Scutaro, who came up throwing too quickly and left it in the dirt. Youkilis was unable to pick it, leaving the bases loaded. OBP-man Nick Johnson followed with a walk from Hideki Okajima. Teixeira flew out to end the rally. David Robertson allowed a single to Youkilis to start the inning, and was relieved by Damaso Marte , who retired David Ortiz after a careless error on a pickoff attempt, allowing Youk to take second. Joba Chamberlain was then brought on to face Adrian Beltre and JD Drew, and struck them out with ease, reaching 96 mph on the YES gun. Robinson Cano provided insurance with a home run to right in the ninth, and Mariano Rivera shut it down while looking sharp for the save. Final: Yankees 6, Red Sox 4
