The New York Yankees gave a reason why they are Pedro Martinez’s daddy.
Martinez pitched six innings giving up three runs in the 3-1 Game Two victory by the Yankees. Pedro allowed two solo homers, one to first baseman Mark Teixeira in the fourth and then another to Hideki Matsui in the sixth on a pitch that was practically in the dirt.
Teixeira, who was struggling in this postseason as of late, was 1-for-3 with the homer and a strikeout as he really lifted Yankee spirits with his bomb.
Matsui was 2-for-3 on the night with the homer, a walk, and a strikeout.
Another bright spot for the Yankees was the performance they received from starter A.J. Burnett, who really bounced back after some poor outings in the ALDS. Burnett pitched seven strong innings allowing one run in the top of the second inning. He struck out nine and walked just two.
Mariano Rivera relieved Burnett for the six-out save and gave the young Yankee bullpen a rest.
The story for the Phillies was that the first four batters in the lineup could not get anything going. Rollins was 0-for-2, Victorino 1-for-3, Utley 0-for-3, and Ryan Howard was 0-for-4 as well.
Matt Stairs, who started as the DH instead of Ben Francisco, drove home Raul Ibanez in the second inning to put the Phillies up for a little while. Ibanez was 2-for-3 on the night with a double.
The World Series is now tied up at one game apiece as the series moves to Citizens Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia on Saturday night.
It looks like Cole Hamels will get the start against Andy Pettitte in a matchup that could either lead to a blow out or a pitcher’s duel.
