Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports the extent of Ivan Nova’s elbow injury:
The MRI on RHP Ivan Nova last night has revealed a partial tear of ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow. He will be placed on the disabled list today and will be further examined tomorrow in New York by Yankees team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad.

I said to [Nova], “Where are you feeling it?” And he said his elbow, but he wanted to still pitch. I said, “No, you’re done,” and took him out. …
…Any time you lose a starter, it’s a big blow. Starters aren’t easy to replace.

As if getting shelled for eight runs in four innings on Saturday wasn’t bad enough for Ivan Nova, he suffered an elbow injury against the Tampa Bay Rays.
MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reported that the New York Yankees’ starting pitcher will have tests on Sunday to reveal the seriousness of the problem:

The injury came in the top of the fifth inning during an Evan Longoria at-bat. Jack Curry of the YES Network reported that Nova was looking at his hand, but it was the right arm that seemed to be the issue:
This is simply piling more issues onto what has already been a below-average 2014 for Nova.
In his three previous starts, he boasted a 2-1 record, but his earned run average was 5.94 and his fielding independent pitching was up to 4.94, according to Baseball-Reference.com. The Ivan Nova of 2013 has been nowhere to be seen so far this year.
The Yankees aren’t blessed with a ton of depth in the starting rotation, so the hope will be that Nova’s injury is only minor. If he’s forced to miss a significant amount of time, New York could be in trouble in the ultra-competitive American League East.
Even if Nova makes a quick recovery, though, there’s no question that he’ll have to make a massive improvement from where his level of performance has been in the early stages of the 2014 campaign.
