Alex Rodriguez Does Face-Plant With Belly Flop Slide, Poses for Teammates

There are moments when I can do nothing but sit back and smile. And on Thursday, that’s exactly what I did when I saw this happen to Alex Rodriguez:

The play happened in the bottom of the fourth inning as the New York Yankees trailed the Boston Red Sox, 3-2. Rodriguez hit a double into the gap and awkwardly slid into second base.

I’ll admit, when any player goes face-first into the dirt on a slide, it’s hilarious. When it’s Rodriguez, it’s even funnier…at least in my book.

Now I know people are going to call me an A-Rod-hater, but that couldn’t be any further from the truth. I don’t root for him to fail; he takes care of that all by himself.

All kidding aside, Rodriguez has actually been pretty good since he made his season debut on Aug. 5. He’s batting .277 with four home runs and 10 RBI and has a hit in 11 of his last 14 games.

A-Rod’s pending suspension (and appeal) will be the big elephant in the room for the rest of the season. It’s something that most people will think about when they see him play.

However, the one thing I’ve noticed over the last month is that Rodriguez is having more fun playing the game than he ever has. Maybe it’s because there’s a possibility that this year could be his last if the 211-game suspension holds up from MLB.

If it does, Rodriguez won’t be eligible to come back until the 60th game of the 2015 season. By that time, he’ll be ready to turn 40. In essence, this could be his last rodeo.

Regardless, having Rodriguez play at a good level (compared to last year) is something Yankees fans want to see. In the end, it’s about winning a World Series. If Rodriguez gives them a better chance to do that, then so be it.

The appeals process concerning the suspension will take care of itself in the offseason. For now, I’m going to enjoy baseball and all of its little quirks like this.
