New York Yankees free agent second baseman Robinson Cano has fired Scott Boras, arguably baseball’s best agent. Boras is notorious for taking big-name MLB stars to free agency and landing them the contract of their dreams. Instead of following the trend, Cano, who is in the final year of a $57 million contract, has signed with Roc Nation. (via Buster Olney of ESPN.com)
Roc Nation is an entertainment company founded by Jay-Z, a lifelong New Yorker and Yankees fan, and currently has an ownership share with the Brooklyn Nets. By signing it’s first sports client in Cano, Roc Nation has partnered with Creative Artists Agency (CAA). For now, CAA sports’ baseball group will handle Roc Nation’s sport agency business and will be officially be known as Roc Nation Sports.
Scott Boras may be the big name agent in baseball today, but CAA Sports’ baseball group is no slouch either. In the past two years the group has negotiated contracts for Ryan Braun, Matt Cain, Ryan Zimmerman and Buster Posey. Specifically, Cano will be paired with Brodie Van Wagenen, one of CAA Sports’ top baseball agents.
Jay-Z will not be directly involved in negotiation contracts between Cano and the Yankees, but the entertainment genius has not ruled it out for future Roc Nation Sports clients. If and when Jay-Z becomes a certified baseball agent, he could quickly become the biggest agent on the block.
Imagine Bryce Harper, Clayton Kershaw and other rising MLB stars firing their agents and signing on with Roc Nation Sports. It could be a surprise spark in the baseball world, but nonetheless a spark the sport is in dire need for and Robinson Cano could have very well set the trend with his move.
