New York Yankees: Bombers Add Bobby Wilson as Catcher Depth for 2013

The New York Yankees still don’t have a starting catcher for 2013.

They do have a lot of backup catchers who have chances to compete for a spot in 2013.

Already on the team are Chris Stewart and Francisco Cervelli, plus minor leaguer Austin Romine.

On Thursday, according to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Yankees added another long-time backup in Bobby Wilson:

Catcher Bobby Wilson has agreed to terms on a minor-league deal with the Yankees, with an invitation to spring training.

With the minor league deal, Wilson will be invited to spring training to compete for a spot on the major league team.

The 29-year-old former Angel hit .211 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 75 games with the Halos in 2012.

A couple of weeks ago, following the departure of Russell Martin to the Pittsburgh Pirates as a free agent, the Yankees were rumored to have interest in former White Sox backstop A.J. Pierzynski, but nothing has come from those supposed talks.

So for right now, it’s either Stewart and Cervelli penciled in as the starter, with Wilson and Romine looking for shots as backups.

This is the kind of news that may be forgotten about come January, but once spring training starts, don’t be shocked if Wilson makes the roster for his defensive skills.
