The New York Yankees got a great piece of news today when they found out that Andy Pettitte will be ready to take the mound on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bryan Hoch of MLB.com broke the news via Twitter:

Pettitte has been absent from the Yankees’ rotation for far too long—since June 27 to be exact. That was a result of Pettitte taking a line drive off his leg, effectively knocking him out for over two months.

After a setback, Pettitte was actually in danger of missing the rest of the season. That would have been a nightmare for the Bombers.

Before his injury, Pettitte was one of the Yanks best starters. He was 3-3 with a 3.29 ERA. Pretty impressive numbers for a 40-year-old who was fresh off a year hiatus.

Since then, the Yanks built and lost a huge lead in the American League East. Once ahead by 10 games, the Yankees are know dead even with the Baltimore Orioles for the division lead.

Other starters such as CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova have seen the DL this season as well, adding to the Yankees’ headaches.

Hiroki Kuroda has done an incredible job of giving the Yanks a reliable starter to go to, while David Phelps, Freddy Garcia and Phil Hughes have also done their best to piece the rotation together.

But make no mistake about it: the Yankees are looking for a third starter to help solidify their playoff rotation. Both Nova and Hughes have been far too inconsistent this season, and Pettitte’s return makes him the only viable candidate to fill in behind Sabathia and Kuroda.

Pettitte’s return should be a huge boost for this rotation and could very well propel the Yanks to October baseball despite their recent struggles.
